Cross Blades

Role: Solo developer

Project Description:

This was my final-year project in college.

This game is a two-player sword and shield fighter with a focus on realistic fighting styles.
It achieves this by using positive reinforcement systems by only allowing players to deal damage if they have moves or attack in a way that emulates a realistic fighting style

Cross Blades was originally hosted on itch.io and run on the Quest 2 but the relay servers have since been shut down, leaving the game currently unplayable

Interesting / Unique elements

Multiplayer: This game was the first time i worked with multiplayer in any substantial way

Mobile device: Cross Blade was developed as a Quest 2 game and as a result, was optimized to be as light as possible for the hardware

Zone system: the player is divided into 6 different zones: left/right, then high, middle, and low. These were used as an attack charge system: a player was limited in where they could hit the opponent based on where they charged their attack, so only realistic moves could actually damage the opponent. For example, an attack from the high zone can do damage to high zones but not to low zones, or a swiping attack from the player’s right can do damage to the opponent’s left side but not their right.

Arm IK: to add an extra level, the players’ arms are rigged using Unity’s IK system. Meaning the players had to watch where their arms were to prevent their opponents from hitting them
